Animation Merit Badge Sun. Nov. 8, 2015
Limited to 20 scouts. Wear your troop t-shirt and BSA shorts or pants. Have with you the Animation MB booklet and worksheet, along with a blue card. Complete requirement 1 beforehand. RSVP to Mrs. Houseknecht.
Firestone Merit Badge Day Sat. Sep. 26, 2015
We will carpool to the Firestone Scout Reservatiion in Brea. Pick one merit badge to earn: Electricity, Engineering, Environmental Science, or Radio. Make sure you do any prerequisites beforehand. Cost is $20, which includes lunch. Class sizes are limited so RSVP to Mrs. Hagegard ASAP.
Mt. Wilson Hike Sat. Jun 6, 2015
This strenuous hike to the summit of Mt. Wilson will start at Chantry Flats and following the Winter Creek trail. The round trip distance is 14 miles, with an elevation gain of 3,400 ft. Meet at the Chantry Flats parking lot at 6:30 am and have with you a signed activity consent form and a daypack with the 10 essentials, a sack lunch and three liters of water. (There is also a snack bar at the top of Mt. Wilson where you can buy lunch.) We will return to Chantry Flats around 3:30 pm. Chantry Flats is above Arcadia (take I-210, exit at Santa Anita Ave. and drive north until the road ends). An Adventure pass is required to park at Chantry Flats (if you don't have one, get a pass from Mr. Haxton that morning). Family members are welcome. RSVP to Mr. Kunkle.
San Gorgonio Wilderness Overnight Backpack Sat.-Sun. May 30-31, 2015
This strenuous high altitude outing is in the San Gorgonio Wilderness Area of the San Bernardino Mountains. We start at the South Fork trailhead and hike 6.5 miles with 2,700 ft elev. gain to our campsite at Dollar Lake (elev. 9,400 ft). The next morning we get up early and take daypacks 4 miles with 2,100 ft elev. gain to the top of San Gorgonio Mountain, the highest peak in Southern California at 11,503 ft. We descend to our campsite and then to our cars, a total of 14.5 miles the second day. We return to La Canada late Sun. afternoon. Meet Sat. at 6:30 am at the Ralphs parking lot. Veterinary Medicine Merit Badge Sat. May 23, 2015
Dr. Woody Walker of La Canada Pet Clinic will lead this merit badge at his offices at 1400 Foothill Blvd. from 12:30 to 2:30 pm on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. Scouts will need to read the merit badge pamphlet and fill out the worksheet beforehand. RSVP to Mr. Houseknecht.
Family Hike-N-Picnic Sat. May 16, 2015
Meet at 9:30 am at the picnic tables near the bathroom on the upper level of Hahamongna Park (don't go down the hill). Wear your troop t-shirt, bring a signed activity consent form and a daypack with the 10 essentials, plus your lunch. We will first work on the Second Class map and compass requirements (nos. 1a & 1b). Then we'll hike two miles along the Arroyo Seco down to the golf course by the Rose Bowl, and return to Hahamongna around noon. At Hahamongna, we'll have a picnic with the food and drink you brought, and finish around 12:30. Family members are welcome to join the hike and picnic. Contact Mr. Walton with any questions.
Little Jimmy Overnight Backpack Sat.-Sun. Apr. 11-12, 2015
For older scouts only. Meet at the Ralphs parking lot at 8 am wearing your troop t-shirt and a hat, and with a signed activity consent form. In your backpack have the 10 essentials, sleeping bag and pad, tent, daypack, a sack lunch, a freeze-dried dinner, and a breakfast. Bring a JetBoil and fuel if you have it, otherwise you can boil water for dinner and breakfast using someone else's JetBoil. We drive to the Islip Saddle parking lot on Angeles Crest Highway, hike two miles to Little Jimmy campground, set up camp, then hike 6 miles to the summit of Mt. Baden Powell (elevation 9,407 ft, elevation gain from Islip Saddle: 2,700 ft) and return to Little Jimmy. The next morning we hike out to the cars and get back to LCF before noon. Law Merit Badge Tue. Mar. 17, 2015
Meet at 8:15 am at the Ralphs parking lot wearing full uniform including neckerchief. Bring worksheet, pen, blue card and lunch money. We will be going to the Burbank courthouse, then to Georgee's Pizza in LCF to eat lunch and complete the requirements. Pick up is at Georgee's at 1 pm. Before then, get a blue card from Dr. Kast, read the Law merit badge booklet, print and fill out the worksheet, and do requirements 5 and 4 (except for interviewing a law enforcement officer). RSVP to Mrs. Adler and let her know if your parent is driving.
Earl Canyon Hike Sun. Mar. 8, 2015
Meet at 8:45 am in the parking lot in front of Palm Crest Elementary at 5025 Palm Dr., La Canada. Wear your troop t-shirt and a hat, have your signed activity consent form, and carry in a daypack the 10 essentials, two liters of water and a lunch. (Those going to Philmont should be carrying a 25-lb backpack.) We will hike on the Earl Canyon fire road and trail high above La Canada with sweeping views of the Los Angeles basin and the Pacific Ocean. Total distance hiked will be 8-10 miles, with an elevation gain of 2,300 ft. We willl return to Palm Crest Elementary around 2 pm. Family members are welcome, minimum age 11. RSVP to Mr. Markarian by Sat. night.
Spruce Grove Hike Sun. Feb. 22, 2015
Meet at the Ralphs parking lot at 8 am wearing your troop t-shirt and a hat, and carrying a daypack with the 10 essentials, two liters of water, a lunch and your signed activity consent form. (Those going to Philmont should be carrying a 20-lb backpack.) Drivers will drop us off at the trailhead at Chantry Flats, above Arcadia 20 minutes from La Canada, then pick us up there and return us to the Ralphs parking lot around 3 pm. We will hike from Chantry Flats to Spruce Grove with a short detour to Sturdevant Falls, then return to Chantry Flats, a total of 8 miles with 1,400 ft of elevation gain. Family members are welcome, minimum age 11. RSVP to Mr. Bell by Sat. night, and also let him know if a family member can drive.
