Scouts need only talk for a minute or two, just say something you think the other Scouts will find interesting. Camp Iron Chef Fri.-Sun. Oct. 4-6, 2019

This year Camp Iron Chef will be held at the Hubert Eaton Scout Reservation (formally Forest Lawn) near Lake Arrowhead. This is the site where we held Camp Iron Chef in 2018 and Space Camp three years ago.

We will be cooking with propane stoves, charcoal and dutch ovens. You'll be able to work on the cooking merit badge, or do cooking requirements for rank advancement.

While the focus of the weekend is cooking, we will have time for some other activities. After breakfast those who wish can join a hike on the Reservation Outlook Trail. This is a 4-5 mile easy hike with a 700' elevation gain up to a scenic overlook. This hike typically takes 2 - 2.5 hours, so scouts will be back in time for lunch. And this year, I'll make sure they check the trail for wasps!! In the afternoon, we hope to open both the archery range and shooting range (pending available staff). Adults and siblings will also be able to use the ranges if open (over 7 yrs archery; over 11 yrs rifle).

For scouts who are not working on their camp/advancement cooking but still need their trail cooking (req. 6), we will offer the Mount Sorenson hike again. This is also a good start for Philmont Training! This is a 10-12 mile trail with a 1400' elevation gain, so will take 5-7 hours. We will get up and on the trail early, and break for a cold breakfast after an hour or so on the trail. We'll eat a hot lunch cooked on trail stoves and a snack on the way back. This hike will be limited to experienced hikers (including adults and siblings) and subject to approval to participate. The number of scouts who can do the trail cooking is dependent on how many people do the hike.

.

We will meet Friday at 5 pm at the Ralphs parking lot. Wear your class A uniform. Bring a signed activity consent form, your 10 essentials, a sleeping bag, and other camping equipment needed by your and your patrol. Bring the food assigned by your patrol leader. Also bring dinner with you or eat before we leave.

Please note that the average high at Lake Arrowhead in October is 64 degrees, and the low is 42. Make sure that you bring warm clothes and a warm sleeping bag (or extra blanket).

Ad Altare Dei Religious Emblem starting Mon. Sep. 30, 2019

This is not a troop sponsered event.

The Ad Altare Dei is one of two Catholic religious emblems that can be earned as a BSA Scout.

This class will be open to all eligible Scouts from Pack 509. The AAD classes are a huge commitment, take at least 6 months to complete and have certain requirements that will limit those eligible to participate.

To be eligible Scouts will need to:

1. Be an active Scout in 7th, 8th or 9th grade as of September 2019 (this is open to both B509 and G509).

2. Be a practicing Catholic (i.e., baptized, first communion and regular mass attendance). Exceptions on a case by case basis can be made for Scouts that strongly identify as Catholic but are unable to meet these requirements due to lack of family support.

3. Be willing to commit to approximately 11 classes (2 hours each), a Catholic retreat or day of reflection, up to 2 additional outings, 6 service projects and some homework over a 6 month period. Scouts who miss more than 2 sessions will have to repeat the entire program in a subsequent session if offered. Missed sessions must be made up within the class schedule.

We plan to meet at St. Bede Church on alternating Monday nights (and possibly some Sundays). This might require Scouts to miss one Troop meeting per month.

Attached is a tentative class schedule and outline. As you can see, this is a very intensive program. At the end, there will be a Board of Review and presentation of medals.

IMPORTANT: The MANDATORY Catholic Scout Retreat will be held all day on Saturday, October 5, 2019. Registration is open now and payment will be DUE September 16th. More details to follow.

Descanso Service Day - Star & Life Rank Sat. Jun. 22, 2019

This service project was set up with Star or First Class Scouts in mind but other scouts 13+ years may also join.

For both the Star & Life ranks, scouts are required to perform six hours of service. For Life, three of those hours must be conservation-related. Knowing that a number of scouts need to get this done, I have contacted Descanso Gardens and they have taken the time to find us a project this Saturday.

We will work from 9 am - noon. If you only need the three hours of conservation work, you can sign up for just one shift. Otherwise, you can sign up for both. We have a limit of 10 scouts and all must be at least 13 years old for this event. Descanso sent the following description of the work:

"We have a couple projects in mind, but the primary one is looking like it will be a sand removal project in the Native Garden. It will involve shoveling sand into wheelbarrows. You mentioned that there will be no more than 10 scouts, all 13+ years old. The age and number is good for us. Dutch King's Day Sun. Apr. 28, 2019

The troop is going to assist the Dutch Community in their celebration of the birthday of the Dutch King. This is at a festival in Long Beach (dutchkingsday.com, dutch-day.com), where 2,500 orange dressed Dutch people will gather for a big party with classical Dutch food, great music, dancing and a variety of traditional games for children. Our Troop has participated many times in the past and we had a blast!

In addition, by participating you will cover the most involved requirement for the American Cultures Merit Badge, which requires participation in a festival of another culture. If you fill out your workbook you will be able to earn this Merit Badge.

We are looking for about 8 Scouts who want to do this and a parent can accompany you. There are also two Scout leaders present, Scoutmaster Dr. Kast and Ken Roffo. Please let me know if you want to participate and if your parent can drive. There are no costs. We will leave from Ralph's at 8 am and most of you will likely go back and leave around 1 pm from Long Beach, although you can stay the whole day and also help clean up at the end (around 6 pm).

Please email Dr. Kast if you want to participate.

This will be a family outing - so you can bring a sibling (10+ years of age and above), invite a friend, and plan on having a great time!

Tomatomania Service Project on Sat. & Sun. Mar. 30 & 31, 2019

Descanso Gardens has asked us for help on March 30-31 with Tomatomania, their annual tomato plant sale. They are looking for volunteers to help visitors carry tomato plants to the front entrance and then load them into cars (no walking through the parking lot).

They are looking for 8 volunteers each day, 4 volunteers from 9am-11am, and 4 volunteers from 11am-1pm, on Saturday and Sunday. Parents can volunteer with their children, or older scouts can volunteer alone if parents sign a consent form when they arrive. Remember that scouts need service hours for every rank.

The troop is not organizing this, so anyone interested can contact Felix Schroeder at volunteer@descansogardens.org for more information. If you do volunteer, ask Felix to sign a piece of paper saying how many hours you worked at Tomatomania so you can show it to your patrol leader.

Camp Trask Service Project, Sat. Feb. 23, 2019

As part of our ongoing campaign to make Camp Trask even better, we're continuing our work to improve our campsites!

Camporee is coming!

To prepare for an outstanding Camporee, we will be focusing on finishing as many of the campsites as possible.

So we have the bear boxes, the tools, and the materials - we just need to add some scout power to get it done.

This will be easy and fun work with lots of opportunities for scouts of different skill levels. And a great chance to earn some service hours.

If you are working toward your First Class, Star, and Life ranks, this project will fulfill your entire conservation-related service project requirement - score. If you're working on a 50-miler, this also fulfills the conservation-related service requirement!

Our mission:

We will work on completing the cooking areas by leveling the ground and install retaining frames, as needed.

For the bear boxes, we will be digging a rectangular area, framing it with wood, then mixing and pouring cement into it. Once the cement sets, we'll finish the surface, and let it dry. Mixing and pouring cement - 'nuff, said, dude.

Things to bring:

Consent form, class B uniform, ten essentials, and work clothes (long pants, closed-toed shoes, and gloves). If you have a reciprocating saw, crowbar, hatched or ax, please bring it along. Again, cement will be involved, so bring clothes that you don't mind getting dirty.

Lunch will be served!

Date: 02/23/2019 (Sat.)

Time: 9:00am - 3:00pm PST

Location: Camp Trask, Monrovia

Please sign-up to help on the sign-up genius.

Joshua Tree Campout Fri.-Mon. Jan. 18-21, 2019

Please note that there are two sign-ups. One to attend and one to sign-up for climbing. Unfortunately, all spots are filled.

Camping: Scout: $20
Sibling: $35
Adult: $45
Climbing: 2 hour: $35
6 hour: $75
Merit Badge (6-7 hours): $100

This is our annual car camping trip in the desert and one of our most popular outings. If you have not been there before, the scenery in Joshua Tree looks like something from another planet. This year we have reserved individual campsites at the Indian Cove campsite. We have room for a total of 114 people and 36 cars. To ensure that scouts have priority on the trip, we are reserving 60 spots for them. If these spots don't fill, we will take additional family campers. As we are limited to the number of people and cars at each sites, we will be doing detailed planning of patrols, tents and sites in December.

New this year is that we have the sites reserved for Friday night as well as the weekend. For those interested in going up Friday night, that will be an option depending on the carpool situation. You can specify this on the sign up sheet.

Activities on this trip include:

- Rock Scrambling: The perennial favorite of the boys. Scouts (and others) may participate in groups of four or more ONLY if each person has a bike helmet AND signed permission form. The rocks are abrasive; gloves are advised. If a scout is NOT permitted to rock scramble, one of their parents must accompany them on the trip to ensure they don't participate.

- Rock Climbing: The highlight of the trip. This is a chance to climb on belay on natural climbing walls in the park. Instruction is by BSAonBelay. While scouts, siblings, and adults may all climb, priority will be given in that order if more people wish to climb than we have spots for. This activity will be on Sunday.

- Hiking: Joshua Tree National Park offers plenty of day and night hike opportunities. We will be offering a five mile hike on Saturday afternoon.

- Campfire: We will have a traditional scout campfire, so patrols should plan a skit or song.

- Patrol Cooking: Scouts will cook in patrols, so get those advancement requirements done! Each patrol will be assigned a campsite where they will do their cooking. Scouts in the patrol will camp at that site, although some patrols may have some scouts camping at nearby sites.

Preparation:

Temperatures can range from high 60s during the day to low 30s at night, so make sure to bring enough warm clothes. If you don't have a winter sleeping bag, bring a liner or fleece blanket and thermal underwear for pajamas.

Outhouses and fire rings are provided. Fires will only be allowed at sites where adults are camping and agree to ensure the fire is extinguished before they go to bed. The troop will provide firewood for several fires but will not have enough for every site. The Indian Cove campsite has potable water at the ranger station about a mile away, so there is no need to bring water for drinking, cooking, etc. That said, if anyone can bring a large water cooler (e.g., the orange 5-gallon coolers from Home Depot), it will be greatly appreciated. We will make water runs several times during the weekend.

Every participant must have an Activity Consent Form for the trip and have parts A&B of the BSA Medical Form on file with the troop (this includes adults and siblings!). Youth participants (scouts and siblings) who want to rock scramble must also have the Rock Scramble Release signed by a parent. Forms will be emailed but, as always, the activity consent and medical forms are available on the website.

Please expect to carpool. Car assignments will be put together before the trip, please let Gayle know if you plan to drive with a specific person.

The two departure options are Friday 1/18 at 5:30 pm or Saturday 1/19 at 7:30 am. We will meet at Ralph's and depart from there. We will leave Joshua Tree between 9:00 - 10:00 am on Monday, arriving at Ralph's between 12:00 - 1:00 pm. Parents should be available by cell phone so their scouts can call with a more exact arrival time.

Cost:

Cash or checks should be given to Tricia Lippert, troop treasurer.

Camping: $20 per scout; $45 per adult; $35 per sibling.

Climbing: $20 per person. You must sign up for this in advance.

Gas: If you are not driving, please bring two $10 bills - one for each of your drivers (you may have the same or different drivers).

Food: Scouts will plan their menus and purchase food by patrol. Food is included in the price for adults & siblings. Cissie will plan the menu and we will all cook and clean together. Please let Cissie know if you have specific dietary requirements.

Questions:

Leaders: Gayle Hagegard (gayle@hagegard.com) and Cissie Andrews (cissie.andrews@hotmail.com)
