Pack 360 Mistletoe Harvesting and Packing on Sat. Dec. 3

This Weekend, on Sat., Dec. 3, you have the opportunity to get some conservation service hours by removing mistletoe from a campground. Mistletoe is a parasite that grows on host trees, as well as is a festive holiday item. The mistletoe that is removed can be bagged and then sold as part of a fundraiser.

Cub Scout Pack 360 of Verdugo Hills council has been doing this activity for a few years, and is welcoming Scouts from Troop 509 to join them in this activity.

Where And When:

There are two parts to this activity. Service Hours, and Fundraising. You can do one or the other, or both!

Part 1 - Service Hours 7AM - 10AM

Mistletoe Harvesting - Meet at 7a at Ralphs in Sunland (NOT La Canada!)

10455 Sunland Blvd Sunland CA 91040

From Here, we will carpool to Acton to a campground we have received permission to remove the mistletoe. If you have them, bring gloves and clippers and/or trimmers for gardening. A few ladders will be available. This is expected to occur from 7AM - 10AM.

Part 2 - Bagging for Fundraising 11AM - 2PM

Mistletoe that has been harvested is taken to the American Legion Post 288 located at 4011 La Crescenta Ave La Crescenta CA 91214.

Here, scouts will trim and bag the mistletoe. It is easy to do, you will be taught everything you need to know. The bagged mistletoe can then be sold over the holidays as a fundraiser that goes towards your ISA!

Moonlight Hike on Sat. Dec. 3, 2022

Join us on Dec. 3 for an evening hike in Cherry Canyon behind Descanso Gardens. We will meet in Memorial Park in La Cañada just after dark and hikers will be shuttled up to the trailhead. We will hike about three miles back to Memorial Park where we will finish up the night with cocoa and treats.

An 85% full Waxing Gibbous Moon rises earlier in the afternoon at 2:10PM, so it will be fairly high in the sky when we start our hike. As such, flashlights won't really be needed on the trail (but bring them anyway!). Civil twilight, aka dark for all practical purposes, is at 5:10PM, so by the time we get hiking around 5:45PM, it should be awesome!

We do need the aid of some willing parents to help shuttle scouts up to the trailhead and to set up refreshments at the park for when the hike is finished.

Whitewater Rafting and Hiking on Fri. Apr. 22 - Sun. Apr. 24, 2022

Please check your email for the latest information. Please note final payments are due by Mar. 31.

We're bringing back our annual Whitewater & Hiking outing in Kernville. Scouts who sign up for a half day of rafting will spend the other half of the day hiking, visiting Silver City Ghost Town, or panning for gold. Rafting options are given below. We will need at least 2 registered adults to accompany scouts on all activities. There is a lot of information below. Email sheiladunbar@gmail.com with questions.

There are three main activity options at various costs - The Whitewater Merit Badge, High Adventure, Half-Day Rafting, and Lickety Split Rafting. Please look through each of them on the sign-up below and choose what best fits for you.

Everyone planning to go on the water must pass the BSA swim test. If you have passed the test within one year of the trip, you do not have to take it. If you do not pass, you cannot raft!

Calculate your costs and give a check made out to Troop 509 to Sam Lim by Mar 14. After that time, we will open the rafting spots to anyone on the waitlist. If you cancel before Mar. 31, you will only be refunded for your rafting payment if someone else fills the spot. If you cancel after Mar. 31, you will not receive a refund. Please note that parents may be kicked out of the merit badge class if scouts are on the waitlist. Priority goes to scouts who can actually earn that merit badge THEN to family members in order that payment is received.

Bridge to Nowhere Hike on Sat. Apr. 16, 2022

This is a long, fairly flat hike to an abandoned bridge built over the San Gabriel River. The bridge was built in 1936 but the road was washed away in floods in 1938. While this hike has little elevation gain, its main challenge is the water crossings. Recent hikers have described the water level as calf-deep, so plan to get wet. If anyone needs a 10-mile hike for their Hiking MB, we will make sure to add half a mile at some point.

We will meet at Ralphs at 5:45 am for a 6:00 am departure (sharp!) in carpools, which will be organized by crew. We will be back at Ralphs anywhere between 12:30 - 2:30 pm. The drive is an hour, so Scouts will call parents with advance warning of our arrival time. PARENTS: please plan accordingly and be at Ralphs to pick up your children promptly.

Camporee on Fri. Apr. 8 - Sun. Apr. 10, 2022

Camporee is the annual meeting of troops throughout the district where patrols compete in a variety of Scouting challenges. This has traditionally been one of the first campouts our new scouts attend and it's a great introduction to the troop and Scouting. Don't miss this great outing!

BSA Swim Test on Sun. Mar. 20, Thurs. Mar. 24, Sun. Apr. 10, 2022

f you are signed up for the Troop 509 White Water Rafting trip this April and plan to spend any time on the water, YOU MUST PASS THE BSA SWIM TEST. Whitewater rafting is extremely fun but involves fast moving water and it's not uncommon for folks to end up in the river - you need to be able to swim!

THIS REQUIREMENT IS FOR EVERYONE (Youth and adult participants) who plans to be on the water. If you attended Camp Cherry Valley, Sea Base, or Norther Tier this summer (youth or adult), the BSA Swim Test you took at these camps covers you for this activity. These camps and tests are the only exemptions.

To pass the test, one must - Jump feetfirst into water over the head in depth. Level off and swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be completed in one swim without stops and must include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating.

Dawn Mine and Sunset Trail Loop on Sun. Mar. 20, 2022

Due to a helicopter crash, we had to change our plans, and ended up doing the Dawn Mine and Sunset Trail Loop. We got to see a mine site, saw some remains of equipment, and had numerous creek crossings. This alternate hike was about 6 miles in length.

We will meet at Ralphs for a 6:00 am departure (sharp!) in carpools, which will be organized by crew. We will be back at Ralphs anywhere between 12:30 - 2:30 pm. The drive is an hour, so Scouts will call parents with advance warning of our arrival time. PARENTS: please plan accordingly and be at Ralphs to pick up your children promptly.

As the hike is in a wilderness area that requires permits, we will hike in smaller groups (around a dozen people each) with sign-up accordingly. We anticipate a Philmont Group (going to Philmont this year), a Scout group (Scouts & registered adults only), and one or two family groups (Scouts with their non-registered parents & siblings, led by a couple of registered adults). We will need to see what interest there is and might adjust plans if needed. This should be a beautiful hike through a very scenic area, along a creek (your feet up to knees may get wet as the trail crosses the creek multiple times). We will have an enjoyable picnic lunch at the destination, and then return. Also, parking requires a National Forest parking pass.

Polar Bear Challenge due by Sun. Mar. 20, 2022

The Polar Bear Challenge is BACK! And this time you have an additional month to complete it. To earn the badge, you must demonstrate that you are submerging yourself as much as possible, into a body of water that is as cold as you can safely handle. In order to qualify for the badge, you must submit this form with picture/video before the end of Winter, which is always on the Vernal Equinox, which is on Sun. Mar. 20, so get started.

Class 2 out of 2.

The Introduction to Youth Leadership training course is happening this January! Nanor, Laura, Patrick and Mr. Thuss will lead the course as we prepare Scouts for future leadership roles and to advance in leadership training to NYLT and more.

This course is for all First Class Scouts and above who have not yet attended this training. While this course is open to both the girls and boys troop, there will be a second course held in the spring specifically for the Girls troop. Sign ups are limited to 12 Scouts so don't delay.

Once all Scouts that are going to attend have signed up for the course, the prerequisite information will be emailed to them so we can maximize our in person time together. This includes watching 3 videos and review of documentation and PowerPoints.

For more information and to sign-up go to The Sign-Up Genius. Remember to signup for both dates to complete the class.

This is open to all Life Scouts (boys and girls) and to any other Juniors and Seniors. We will meet on Zoom. The class takes between 1-2 hours, depending on how many questions Scouts have. Parents are welcome to sit in but I need one registered adult to commit to being online for the whole class.

Joshua Tree Overnight on Fri. Jan. 14 - Mon. Jan. 17, 2022 - CANCELLED

With the current spike in Covid infection rates, it has become impossible to guarantee the safety of all scouts and participating family members. In particular, should a youth or adult driver present symptoms while at Joshua Tree, a logistical nightmare would ensue - we would not be able to bring our scouts home without subjecting at least one carpool to a known infection risk. With Covid positivity rates in excess of 20%, this is not some obscure risk, but rather a high likelihood given the large number of participants. This, and other material factors lead the Troop Committee to cancel this trip as an official troop event. I assure you, this decision was not arrived at lightly.

Everyone who has paid will be refunded. Many of the checks have not yet been deposited, in which case, they will be returned or destroyed.

However - as stated at the top - people can still go to Joshua Tree on MLK Weekend. We still have the campsites reserved. The climbing outfit, Uprising, is still available to do rope climbs and merit badge programs.

For those still interested in going to Joshua Tree, the troop will sell the reservations to interested families. Those adults who are currently signed up for the trip will have priority in buying sites but they MUST express their interest to Mrs. Hagegard by Jan. 8.

We're happy to be able to go back to Joshua Tree this year. This is our annual car camping trip in the desert and one of our most popular outings. This year the logistics are a bit trickier than normal since the girls will be staying at the Sheep's Pass campground inside the park, while the boys will be staying at Indian Cove.

Our goal is to allow as many scouts as possible to go, so we are reserving the majority of the spots for them. To ensure we have enough drivers, we are reserving spots for them. All drivers must commit to filling every seat in their vehicle with other scouts as needed. If the scout/driver spots don't fill, we will take additional family campers as space in vehicles/campsites allows.

Campsites:

The girls' troop will be camping at group site 5 at Sheep's Pass campground inside of the park. This site allows 30 people. There is no water at the site, so we will need to bring in all the water we need in coolers or plan to drive out to get more. The girls who will be climbing will need to be driven to Indian Cove on Saturday morning and may eat lunch there. If there is interest, we can hike up Mt Ryan on Sunday.

The boys' troop will be staying at 12 individual campsites at the Indian Cove campground. Each site holds 4-6 people, and we have a total of 60 spots. Water is available at the ranger station a mile from the campsites. So, while there is no need to drive in water, if anyone can bring a large water, it reduce the number of refill runs during the weekend.

Logistics:

We have two departure options: Friday 1/14 at 5:30 pm or Saturday 1/18 at 7:30 am. We will meet at Ralph's and depart from there. Drivers may select whether they want to drive up Friday evening or Saturday morning. Scouts not driving with a parent should specify their preference in the comments (Fri PM/Sat AM) on the sign up, but there are no guarantees. Car assignments will be put together before the trip, please let us know if you want/plan to drive with a specific person.

We will leave Joshua Tree between 9:00 - 10:00 am on Monday, arriving at Ralph's between 12:00 - 1:00 pm. Drivers may only leave early if they either fill their car or this is sufficient room in other cars to get all scouts back on Monday. Parents should be available by cell phone so their scouts can call with a more exact arrival time.

We have multiple sign-ups for different events, so please make sure to check both:

ILST Training Part 1 on Sun. Jan. 9, 2022

Class 1 out of 2.

Lanterman House Shed Cleanup on Sat. Jan. 8, 2022

We will be helping the Lanterman House in La Cañada to empty out the property's historic shed, which has been a storage area for the City of La Canada for a number of years. The Foundation would like to use the building for other purposes and the first step is to clean it out. We'll mostly be carrying stuff to a dumpster, sweeping the floor, and sweeping out cobwebs.

Lanterman will provide N95 masks (the shed is really dusty) and scouts should wear long sleeves, pants, and bring workgloves.
