Rose Parade Float Decorating Thu. Dec. 28, 2017

Help decorate La Canada's float. Meet at 8:15 am at the corner of Foothill Blvd.& Hampton Rd. You will be working outside so wear appropriate clothing. Our 5-hour shift ends at 1:30 pm. This counts as service hours for rank advancement, or for any school-required hours, or for the citizenship in the community merit badge. Hot drinks, snacks and lunch are provided by the LCF Tournament of Roses Association. For scouts under 13 we need to have one adult for every two scouts. Limited to 30 decorators (20 scouts, 10 adults and siblings age 13+). Everyone (adults and siblings included) needs to bring a signed activity consent form. Mt. Islip Hike Sat. Dec. 16, 2017

Meet at 7 am at the Ralphs parking lot in La Canada. Wear your troop t-shirt, a hat and hiking boots, and bring a signed activity consent form and a daypack with the 10 essentials, 3-4 liters of water, trail snacks, a bag lunch, personal medications, sunscreen and some extra layers of clothing. We'll carpool an hour up Angeles Crest Hwy. and park at Islip Saddle (40 miles from LCF, at mile marker 64.10). We hike from Islip Saddle to Mt. Islip and return, a total of 7 miles with a 1,600 ft elevation gain. You'll be able to complete your Second Class navigation skills, add a peak toward the Mini-Peak Bagger High Adventure Award (which requires 8 peaks), and complete a hike that qualifies for the hiking merit badge. We will return to Ralphs in La Canada around 3 pm. Parents and experienced siblings are welcome. 25-Mile Orange Line Bike Ride Sun. Dec. 3, 2017

We'll be riding on the bike path that parallels the Orange Line express bus lane, from North Hollywood to Pierce College and return. Meet at 9 am on the south side of Chandler Blvd. a little east of Alcove Ave. Have your bike, a bike helmet, a spare inner tube, water, snacks, a bag lunch and a signed activity consent form. Los Angeles St., LA 90012 (admission $6 adults, $3 youth). Our tour starts at noon. Then we'll walk to the Japanese American National Museum at 100 N. Central Ave., LA 90012 (admission $12 adults, $6 youth). After, we'll go eat at a Japanese restaurant in Little Tokyo. Arrange to be picked up at 5 pm at the Office Depot parking lot at 401 E. 2nd St., LA 90012. This will satisfy requirement 1e of the American cultures merit badge. Come to Hahamongna Park at 10:30 am to 1) earn the Firem'n Chit, which a scout must have to be able to carry fire-lighting devices and build campfires, 2) earn the Totin' Chip, which a scout must have to be able to carry and use a knife and axe, 3) learn knots and 4) learn to whip and fuse rope. Wear your troop t-shirt and closed-toe shoes, and bring a signed activity consent form, a day pack with your 10 essentials (there will be an inspection), your scout handbook, a pen, and food to share. The troop will supply hot dogs, chips and water to go along with the food the scouts bring. Parents and siblings can join us at 1 for the pot luck. We'll be done around 1:30 pm. Mt. Baden-Powell Veterans Day Hike Fri. Nov. 10, 2017

We'll be hiking 10 miles with a 3,000 ft altitude gain in the San Gabriel Mountains, summiting both Mt. Baden-Powell and Throop Peak.

We meet at 6 am at the Ralphs parking lot in La Canada. Wear your troop t-shirt, a hat and hiking boots. Bring a signed activity consent form and a daypack with the 10 essentials, trail snacks, a sack lunch, 4 liters of water, personal medications, and extra clothing for cold weather on the summits. We'll carpool 50 miles up Angeles Crest Hwy. to Dawson Saddle (7,900 ft), then hike to Throop Peak (9,140 ft) and Mt. Baden-Powell (9,400 ft). We'll return to the Ralphs parking lot in La Canada in the late afternoon, no later than 6 pm.

You'll earn the Mt. Baden-Powell High Adventure Award, add two more peaks toward the Mini-Peak Bagger High Adventure Award (which requires 8 peaks), and complete a hike that qualifies for the hiking merit badge.

Scouts under 14 need to be accompanied by a parent, unless the scout has previously completed a hike of at least 5 miles with an elevation gain of at least 1,500 ft.

An Adventure Pass is required to park at Dawson Saddle. If you don't have one, the troop will provide it.

Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge Sun. Nov. 5, 2017

This class will be taught from 9 am to 4 pm by Mrs. Maliksi in Mrs. Hagegard's guest house. You will also need to participate in an emergency drill on a date TBD in Dec. You must be at least age 12 and have previously earned the first aid merit badge. You need to read the merit badge pamphlet before the class and bring it and the merit badge worksheet to class. Also bring your personal emergency kit and a sack lunch (refigeration & microwave on site). You'll need to do requirements 2C, 6B, 6C, 8B, 9A, 9C on your own before the class. Three Peaks Hike Sun. Oct. 29, 2017

Meet at 7 am at the Ralphs parking lot in La Canada. We'll carpool 17 miles up Angeles Crest Hwy. and Mt. Wilson Rd. to our trailhead at Eaton Saddle. Then we'll hike to the summits of Mt. Lowe, Mt. Markham and San Gabriel Peak, a total of 6 miles with an altitude gain of 2,000 ft. You'll be able to complete the navigation skills requirement for Second Class, plus this hike counts as the 5-mile hike required for the hiking merit badge, and you can count 2 of the peaks toward the Mini-Peak Bagger High Adventure Award (which requires 8 peaks).

Wear your troop t-shirt and shorts or convertible pants, hat, and hiking boots or sneakers. Bring a signed activity consent form and a daypack with the 10 essentials, sunscreen, pen or pencil, personal medications, 3-4 liters of water, snacks and a bag lunch. Bring a light jacket in case it gets chilly. Your compass must be baseplate or baseplate with mirror. You can bring knife and matches only if you've earned the Totin' Chip and Firem'n Chit and have those cards with you. Those driving will need an Adventure Pass to park at the trailhead, and the troop will supply you with a pass if you don't have a pass. We'll return to the Ralphs parking lot around 3 pm.

Newport Sea Base Sat. Oct. 28, 2017

Sign up HERE with the troop, and HERE with Newport Se Base (go to new users and create an account; for the kayaking class select Oct. 27 "custom class for Troop 509"; then send an email to Mr. Klapmust telling him that you've signed up with Newport Sea Base).

Earn either the kayaking merit badge or the motor boating merit badge. The kayaking class will be exclusively Troop 509 scouts, maximum 12, and cost $85. The motor boating class will be with scouts from other troops, cost $95, and requires that you already have earned the kayaking merit badge. For both classes, there will be a BSA swim test immediately preceding the class.

There are very few spaces in the motor boating class, so sign up ASAP. You'll need to create an account on Newport Sea Base's website and list John Klapmust as your referrer. After signing up, send Mr. Klapmust an email letting him know you are going (otherwise he won't know you signed up).

Before taking the merit badge class, you'll need to read the merit badge pampthlet and complete the worksheet. The day before the class, drink plenty of water and get a good night's sleep, and then eat a substantial breakfast.

We'll meet at the Ralphs parking lot in LCF at 6:45 am. Wear your troop t-shirt, have your swimsuit on under your shorts, and wear sneakers. In a daypack have a rashguard swim shirt, hat, sunglasses, towel, 3-4 liters of water/Gatorade, snacks, bag lunch, sun block, lip balm, first aid kit and any required personal medications, plus have dry clothes and shoes for going home. Bring your merit badge pampthlet and filled out worksheet, a pen or two, and a signed activity consent form. You can bring a little money for the on-site vending machines that sell snacks and patches. We drive 60 miles to Newport Beach (1931 West Coast Hwy. 92663), and later return to the Ralphs parking lot around 5-5:30 pm.

Taste of Soul Family Festival Sat. Oct. 21, 2017

This is a very popular festival, in its 12th year, celebrating African-American heritage and taking place on Crenshaw Blvd. between Rodeo Rd. and MLK Jr. Blvd. There will be food to purchase, live entertainment, artists' displays and exhibits from businesses and organizations.

Wear your troop t-shirt. No cost, but bring money if you want to buy any food or merchandise. This event qualifies for one requirement of 1a of the American cultures merit badge.

Ocean Fishing Sat. Sep. 23, 2017

Arrive no later than 6:15 am at Pierpoint Landing near the Long Beach aquarium. Our charter boat, The City of Long Beach, leaves at 6:30 am and returns to the dock at noon. We'll be fishing for yellowtail, white seabass, barracuda, calico bass, sand bass and rockfish.

The cost will depend on how many people go, so somewhere between $45 and $75 per person (the boat's capacity is 75). Fishing equipment can be rented at the dock for about $7. Those 16 and older need a fishing license -- a one-day license costs $16 and can be purchased at the dock. Bait is provided free by the boat.

Everyone should have sun protection including a hat and sunscreen, and everyone needs to bring a signed activity consent form. You can bring your own food and drink, or buy food and drink on the boat. No coolers are allowed on the boat, so if you want to bring your fish home you'll need to bring a gunnysack (and have a cooler with ice in your car).

Families and friends are welcome. Last year everyone caught at least two fish, and we also saw dophins and sea lions.

Waterman Mtn. Hike Sun. Sep. 10, 2017

We meet at the Ralphs parking lot at 6:30 am and carpool one hour up Angeles Crest Hwy. to the trailhead for the Waterman Mtn. Loop Trail. We'll be hiking 5.8 miles with a 1,500 ft elevation gain, and doing the navigation requirements, #3, for Second Class rank. We should be back to La Canada around 3 pm.

Tenderfoot, Scout and unranked scouts qualify to attend. We are limiting this hike to no more than 15 scouts. (There will be future opportunities to attend similar hikes.) After signing up, scouts will receive an email about what kind of compass they need for this outing.

Dodgers Scouts Day Sat. Sep. 9, 2017
This is not a troop activity. The Dodgers' annual Scouts Day is against the Rockies at 6:10 pm. In addition to watching the game, you can also arrive early at 1:30 pm to watch or enter the 6-story egg-drop contest in lot G. A patch will be given to all scouts. Buy tickets at dodgers.com/scouts. Ticket prices range from $27 to $42, or $46 for the all-you-can-eat right field pavilion.
Mt. Wilson Observatory Service Weekend Fri.-Sun. Aug. 25-27, 2017

The Observatory has asked for the troop's help in clearing brush and other work. We'll meet Fri. at 5:30 pm at the Ralphs parking lot in La Canada and carpool up to the Observatory. After a possible star gazing session, we'll sleep either in tents outside or on the concrete floor of the covered snack bar patio. On Sat. we'll clean up the area around the summit. After dinner we'll watch two movies in the auditorium. Sun. morning we'll have a private tour of the Observatory, including a couple of the telescopes, maybe the same 100-inch telescope that Edwin Hubble used to determine that the universe is expanding, which led to the Big Bang Theory.

Scouts will earn community service hours and the Messenger of Peace Award. They will also satisfy some requirements for the astronomy and citizenship the community merit badges.

Wear long pants, long-sleeve shirt and close-toe shoes, plus bring work gloves. Bring a rake if you have one.

San Bernardino Peak Overnight Sat.-Sun. Aug. 5-6, 2017

This is a two-day overnight to the 10,649' summit of San Bernardino Peak, which is a subsidiary peak of San Gorgonio Mountain, the highest peak in Southern California at 11,503'. The hike is 8 miles up and 8 miles down, with an elevation gain of 4,700 ft. Scouts under 14 must be accompanied by a parent.

We'll meet at the Ralphs parking lot at 6:30 am and carpool 90 miles to the trailhead at Angelus Oaks, which is east of Redlands on CA-38. On the first day we'll hike 6 miles with 3,240 ft elevation gain to Limber Pine Camp and spend the night. The second day we'll hike 2 miles to the summit, then return 8 miles back to the trailhead and drive home. We should be back to La Canada around 7 pm.

Bring a signed activity consent form and your backpack, hat, hiking boots, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, flashlight, 4 liters of water, the 10 essentials, two trail lunches, a freeze-dried dinner and a breakfast. The troop will supply JetBoils and water filters, but bring your JetBoil if you have one. You and your tentmate will need a tent.

An Adventure Pass is required to park at the Angelus Oaks trailhead, which the troop will provide if you don't have one.

Mt. Baldy Hike Sun. Jul. 30, 2017

We will be hiking to the summit of Mt. Baldy, at 10,064 ft the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains.

We'll meet at the Ralphs parking lot at 6:30 am and drive one hour, 46 miles, to the trailhead northeast of Claremont. There will be two hiking groups:

The MODERATE group will ride the Mt. Baldy ski lift to Baldy Notch, then hike to the summit of Mt. Baldy on the Devil's Backbone trail, a distance of 3.5 miles with a 2,400 ft elevation gain. They will then return to Baldy Notch on the same trail and eat lunch at the restaurant there, and after lunch take the ski lift down to the bottom. Total hiking distance will be 7 miles with an elevation gain of 2,400 ft.

The STRENUOUS group will hike to the summit via the Baldy Bowl trail, a distance of 4.5 miles with a 3,900 ft elevation gain. They will then hike 3.5 miles on the Devil's Backbone trail down to Baldy Notch and eat lunch at the restaurant there. They will then take the ski lift down to the botttom and hike another mile down the road to their cars. Total hiking distance will be 9 miles with an elevation gain of 3,900 ft.

The ski lift costs $11/$9/$7 one-way and $20/$15/$10 round trip (prices are for adults/ages 13-18/under 13, purchased online in advance). The restaurant charges about $12 for a sandwich or burger, or bring your own lunch. There is also a 600 ft zipline at Baldy Notch, but it costs $45/$40/$35. (Groupon has deals that make it a lot cheaper).

We should be back to La Canada around 4 pm for the moderate group and 7 pm for the strenuous group.

Bring a signed activity consent form and wear your troop t-shirt, a hat and hiking boots, have $40 cash, and in a daypack have 3-4 liters of water, trail snacks and the 10 essentials. You'll need a sweatshirt since the temperature on the summit can be cold.

Directions to the trailhead: Go east on I-210, just past Claremont exit at Baseline Rd., turn left on Baseline, then right on Padua Ave. which turns into Mt. Baldy Rd., then keep going through Mt. Baldy Village. The road becomes divided and you'll pass Manker Flats campground. The strenuous group will park on the side of the road near the intersection with Falls Rd. The moderate group will not stop there but continue until the road ends at the parking lot for the ski lifts. Cars need an Adventure Pass to park on the side of the road or in the parking lot, although the parking lot will sell you a day pass for $5.

National Scout Jamboree Fri. Jul. 14-Fri. Jul. 28, 2017

Mrs. Hagegard and Patrick Salter are leading a council troop that includes 14 scouts from Troop 509: Jack A., Sebastian A.-M., JJ C., Max F., Henri G., Dylan G., Daniel H., Eric H., Nikitas K., Benjamin L., Alexander S., Jonathan S., Luke Y. and Albert Y. There are no openings for additional scouts in this council troop, but other council troops have openings.

The National Jamboree is every four years, and starting in 2013 its permanent home is the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia. The Jamboree is nine days of outdoor activities (climbing, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, hiking, etc.), merit badges, patch trading, concerts and more - maybe even an appearance by President Trump. Scouts attend as members of a Council troop, each with 36 scouts and 4 adults, all from the Greater L.A. Area Council. A scout must be 12 years old by the first day of the Jamboree and at least First Class rank. Before the nine days atĀ Jamboree, the Council troops will take a four-day tour of Philadelphia, Gettysburg and Washington, DC. The cost is $3,500. 13-Mile Bike Ride Along West Fork of the San Gabriel River Sat. Jun. 24, 2017
Meet at 9 am at Ralphs with your bicycle, and a bike rack if you have one. Also bring a bike helmet, a spare inner tube, a sack lunch, and your 10 essentials. We will be on a paved bike path that follows the river, so the terrain will be fairly flat. Our destination is Cogswell Dam, where we'll eat lunch then turn around. A description and photos of the route are HERE. Families are welcome, but siblings must be accompanied by a parent. The trailhead is above Azusa at the Highway 39 West Fork bridge. Parking requires an Adventure Pass, which can be purchased for $5 at the Shell on Angeles Crest Hwy. or at Big 5, or the troop has a limited supply. RSVP to Ms. Barcelo-Sanchez (Cox), and if you are driving let her know how many bicycles you can take.
25-Mile Beach Bike Ride Sun. May 28, 2017
Meet at 8 am at the Ralphs parking lot in La Canada. Wear your troop t-shirt and have your bicycle and helmet and a daypack with a spare inner tube and the 10 essentials, including water. Also bring a signed activity consent form. We will carpool to Will Rogers State Beach in Pacific Palisades and ride 12.5 miles south on the mostly flat class 1 Marvin Braude Bike Trail (The Strand), then turn around and return. Free snacks will be provided. This is a family outing so parents and siblings with parents are welcome. RSVP to Ms. Barcelo-Sanchez (Cox), letting her know if your parent can drive and can take any bikes and if so how many.
Mt. Baden-Powell Hike Sun. May 21, 2017

This strenuous hike to the 9,407-ft summit of Mt. Baden-Powell and back totals 16.2 miles with an elevation gain of 3,800 ft. Scouts under 14 must be accompanied by a parent.

Meet at 6 am at the Ralphs parking lot in La Canada. We carpool an hour up Angeles Crest Hwy. and park at Islip Saddle (40 miles from LCF, at mile marker 64.10). We will be hiking on the Pacific Crest Trail and seeing lots of PCT hikers on their way to Canada. We'll see patches of snow near the summit, and we could see some bighorn sheep. On a clear day the 360-degree view extends from Edwards Air Force Base to Catalina Island. We will return to La Canada around 6 pm.

Any hikers who do not want to go all the way to the summit, or just don't have time to do so, can turn back whenever they choose (so long as any scouts are accompanied by their parent or two adults).

Wear hiking boots and a hat. Bring a daypack with your lunch, trail snacks, at least 3 liters of water, the 10 essentials, and layered clothing for temperatures that could drop to the 40s at the summit. Those going to Philmont will carry daypacks, not their backpacks.

All hikers need a signed activity consent form. An Adventure Pass is needed to park at Islip Saddle, and the troop will have passes for drivers needing a pass.

LCF Merit Badge Day, Sat. May 13, 2017

First Class GPS Mon. May 8, 2017

We will meet at 6 pm at Hahamongna Park to do the new GPS requirement 4b for First Class rank. Bring a smart phone and your Scout Handbook. Wear the Class A uniform you normally wear for troop meetings. We will take our GPS bearings on the phones and plot a course to von Karman auditorium, and then walk our plotted route to arrive at the troop meeting. Limited to 15 scouts, with first priority given to scouts currently Second Class, followed by scouts currently Tenderfoot, followed by scouts currently Scout rank, and finally scouts without rank. Dutch King's Day Sun. Apr. 30, 2017
King's Day (Koningsdag) is an annual celebration in the Netherlands of the Dutch monarch. Dr. & Mrs. Kast are from the Netherlands and are helping to put on a King's Day celebration for the local Dutch community at ShoreLine Aquatic Park in Long Beach (dutchkingsday.com, dutch-day.com). Scouts are needed to help set up, put on wristbands, show people where to go, and clean up. This meets a requirement for the American Cultures merit badge, plus you get community service hours for rank advancement. Stay for however many hours you are able. We will have carpools leaving at 8 am and other times depending on drivers. RSVP to Dr. Kast and let him know if your parent can drive.
Mt. Wilson Trail Hike Sun. Apr. 30, 2017

This is a fairly strenuous hike, with an elevation gain of 3,450 ft and a total distance of 10.8 miles. The trailhead is in Sierra Madre at the intersection of E. Mira Monte Ave. and Mount Wilson Trail. Park on the street. We will meet there at 8:30 am and return around 2:30 pm. Wear your troop t-shirt and a hat, have a signed activity consent form, and carry in a daypack the 10 essentials including 2-3 liters of water, plus snacks. Those going to Philmont should be carrying a backpack weighing 30 lbs (carry water, so you can dump it if needed). We will be hiking to the bench on Manzanita Ridge, not all the way to the Mt. Swim Test & Aquatics Requirements Sat. Apr. 29, 2017

Come to Caltech's Braun Rec Center between 2 to 4 pm, tell the front desk you are there for Boy Scout testing, and you can take a BSA swim test (needed by those going on the whitewater rafting trip or to the National Jamboree) or get signed off on Second Class requirements 5b and 5c, and First Class requirements 6a and 6e. Wear your swimsuit and flip-flops and bring a towel. If you are getting requirements signed off, bring your Scout Handbook. Cost is $5.

Meet at Hahamongna Park's lower parking lot at 10 am wearing your troop t-shirt and have with you your compass and Scout Handbook and some water. We will break into groups to do First Class requirements 4a and 5a. We should be done by noon. Read the relevant sections in the Handbook before you arrive. This is limited to 25 scouts, so priority will be given to scouts in Second Class rank, followed by scouts in Tenderfoot rank, followed by scouts in Scout rank, followed by scouts without rank.
STEM Careers Sat. Apr. 8, 2017
La Canada High School is hosting a career day (Challenge Success: Building Your Path), and one of the presentations is about career options in science, technology, engineering and math. The presenter is DJ Kast, who in additon to being Dr. Kast's daughter, is also the STEM program manager for USC's Joint Educational Project, and the STEM coordinator for USC's Neighborhood Academic Initiative. Scouts attending practice camporee at Hahamongna Park that morning will walk across the street to attend DJ's presentation, and other scouts are welcome to come. The presentation will be in room 310 at 10:15, 10:55 & 11:35.
Kayaking Merit Badge Sat. Mar. 18 & Sun. Mar. 19, 2017
Attend either Sat. or Sun., not both. We meet at the Ralphs parking lot at 7:15 am (time subject to change). Wear your Class A uniform (without neckerchief) with your swimsuit underneath. Bring a jacket, troop t-shirt, hat, towel, flip-flops, sunscreen, sack lunch and water bottle, plus it is recommended you bring a swim shirt and water shoes. Have with you your kayaking merit badge pamphlet and worksheet, a pen, a signed blue card, and a signed activity consent form. Before you go, read the pamphlet, practice your knots, and fill out as much of the worksheet as you can. We'll carpool to the Cabrillo Youth Center, 3000 Shoshonean Rd., San Pedro 90731. At 9 am we'll take the BSA swim test in their pool, then we spend the rest of the day on the beach and in the ocean. We may have time to explore the nearby tidepools. The Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is a short walk away, but we aren't planning to visit. The Youth Center has outdoor showers, and its scout shop may be open so bring money if there's a merit badge pamphlet or something else you need. We'll be back to the Ralphs parking lot around 4:30-5:30 pm. This outing will be canceled in the event of hard rain, but not if it's just drizzling. The cost is $30, plus $5 gas money to the driver for those not driving. There are a limited number of spaces for parents who would like to take this kayaking class. RSVP to Mrs. Maliksi.
La Tuna Canyon Loop Hike Sun. Mar. 12, 2017

Meet at the trailhead at 8:30 am wearing your troop t-shirt and a hat, and carrying a daypack with the 10 essentials, two liters of water, a sack lunch and trail snacks. Wear either hiking boots (preferred) or sneakers. Every hiker, including adults and siblings, also needs to bring a signed activity consent form. We will hike a loop totaling 6.7 miles with an elevation gain of 2,000 ft, finishing by 1 pm (see hike description). Family members are welcome on the hike, minimum age 10. To get to the trailhead at La Tuna Canyon Rd., take the I-210 freeway, exit at La Tuna Canyon Rd., and go southwest 1.4 miles to a parking area (you'll pass two other parking areas on the way). Carpooling is encouraged since parking is limited. Those going to Philmont this summer should be carrying a backpack weighing 20 lbs. Mrs. Shiner is organizing this hike, and Jonathan Shiner is the SPL for the hike.
Aviation Merit Badge Sun. Mar. 12, 2017
Meet at the Ralphs parking lot at 10:30 am wearing your Class A uniform, without the neckerchief or sash. Read the aviation merit badge pamphlet ahead of time and fill out the worksheet. Bring the worksheet with you, along with a signed blue card, a signed activity consent form and a sack lunch. We will go to Santa Monica airport where we will visit American Flyers flight school to learn about ground school and aircraft inspections and try out a simulator. We hope to also be able to tour the control tower, US citizens only. We hope to also have the scouts be able to fly in a 4-seater aircraft, either as pilot (costs $) or passenger. Meet at the trailhead at 10:30 am wearing your troop t-shirt and a hat, and carrying a daypack with the 10 essentials, two liters of water and a sack lunch. Either hiking boots or sneakers. We will hike 3 miles on a fireroad to Tongva Peak in the Verdugo Mountains, gaining 1,475 ft elevation, then eat lunch at the top before returning to the trailhead around 3 pm, a total of 6 miles (see hike description). Family members are welcome on the hike, minimum age 10. To get to the trailhead at 1300 Beaudry Blvd., Glendale 91208, take the I-210 freeway and exit at La Crescenta Ave., go south 1.2 miles .and turn right on Oakmont View Dr., go 0.5 miles and turn left on Barnes Circle, go 0.3 miles and turn right on Beaudry Blvd., park on the street near the fireroad, where a sign says "No Dumping." Those going to Philmont this summer should be carrying a backpack weighing 15 lbs. Mr. Hill is organizing this hike, and Corwin Hill is the SPL for the hike.
Skiing/Snowboarding Sun. Feb. 5 & Feb. 26, 2017
This is not a troop activitiy, but Mountain High Ski Resort near Wrightwood has two Scout Sundays in which for the price of $69 you get ski/snowboard rental, an 8-hour lift ticket, lunch, and either a group lesson or a testing session for the skiing merit badge. Sign ups start in Dec., and you should sign up early because there are limited spaces. Go to Mountain High's website for more information.
Ballona Creek Bike Ride Sat. Feb. 25, 2017
We will ride from Culver City to the beach at Marina del Rey on the class I Ballona Creek bike trail, which is paved and flat. Wear your troop t-shirt and meet at the Ralphs parking lot at 9 am with your bicycle, helmet, water, sack lunch, sunscreen, 10 essentials and signed activity consent form. We'll carpool to Syd Kronenthal Park in Culver City, and meet behind the baseball field backstop, where the bike path begins. Families are welcome to join (all participants need a signed activity consent form). This will satisfy one of the requirements for the cycling merit badge. RSVP to Mr. Goldstein, and also let him know if you are driving and if you are able to take any bikes.
Firem'n Chit Day Sun. Feb 12, 2017
Come to Hahamongna Park at 1 pm to earn the Firem'n Chit, which a scout must have to be able to carry fire-lighting devices and build campfires. Wear your troop t-shirt and closed-toe shoes and bring a signed activity consent form, the ten essentials, your scout handbook and a pen. There will be snacks and water. We'll be at an upper picnic table (don't drive down the hill), and we should be done around 3 pm. RSVP to Mr. Walton.
