About Us

JPL Troop 509 in La Cañada Flintridge, California, is chartered by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The troop was established in 1952, with a linked girls' troop added in 2019. The troop is known for its many outdoor activities, high adventure trips, and long history of Eagle Scouts. As of 2023, we have over 100 scouts in our combined troops, coming from La Cañada, Pasadena, Glendale and other nearby communities. The troop is in the Rose Bowl District of the Greater Los Angeles Area Council.

Troop Meetings are most Mondays at 7pm. We meet at either JPL or La Cañada High School during the school year, and in nearby Hahamongna Watershed Park during the summer.

Outings include summer camp, backpacking, whitewater rafting, climbin at Joshua Tree camping, ocean kayaking, Camporee, local hikes (including night hikes), Camp Iron Chef, bicycling, and snow sports. Our backpacking program includes multiday trips to the High Sierras for experienced scouts.

BSA National High Adventure Outings. Each year the troop sends crews to one or more of the BSA's four high adventure bases: Philmont (backpacking in New Mexico's Rocky Mountains), Northern Tier (canoeing in Minnesota's Boundary Waters), Summit (whitewater rafting on West Virginia's New River), and Sea Base (sailing & snorkeling in the Florida Keys).
