New Scouts
Welcome to Scouts BSA!
If you are coming from Cub Scouts, you will notice some differences in the program. First, the Scouts run the troop meetings and outings, not the adults. Adult leaders are there to guide the youth, not lead. Second, each Scout advances at their own pace and each has a different Scouting journey. There is no den leader making arrangements for you to advance and earn awards -- instead, you choose your own level of participation in the troop, select the outings that sound fun to you, and choose your own rate of advancement.
As with other things in life, you get out of Scouting what you put into it, so we encourage you to be active in attending troop meetings and outings, and to be proactive in doing the requirements for advancing in rank and earning merit badges.
The links on the right have information for scouts and parents.
There is no special start date for new scouts. Just come to the next troop meeting, even if you don't yet have a uniform.
Joining the Troop
If you are interested in learning more about joining the troop, please reach out to the following for more information about the troop and how to join:
- For the boys’ troop, email the New Member Coordinator (Ms. Maliksi)
- For the girls’ troop, email the Scoutmaster (Ms. Hagegard)
You'll need to purchase a Scout Handbook and a uniform consisting of:
- tan Scout BSA shirt
- insignia
- troop numerals 509
- green shoulder loops
- Greater Los Angeles Area Council shoulder patch
- World Scout Crest patch
- olive Scout BSA pants or shorts, convertible pants/shorts, or skorts.
(the troop often has pants outgrown by older scouts; ask us before you buy) - Scout BSA web belt (unless the pants have a built-in belt)
- Scout BSA socks
- Merit Badge sash
Our troop does not wear the Boy Scout cap, so you do not need to purchase one.
When you join the troop, you will receive a troop neckerchief, a troop t-shirt, a nametag, a neckerchief slide, and a Rose Bowl district patch (if needed). It is also possible to buy additional t-shirts ($15-$20), neckerchiefs ($15), nametags ($6), Rose Bowl Patches ($3), and troop Beanies ($15).
Note that:
- at troop meetings the boys wear the uniform without the neckerchief or sash; the girls wear the neckerchief and any slide they wish
- on outings we generally wear the troop t-shirt (often called Class B)
- at courts of honor we wear the full uniform including neckerchief and sash
