This is the troop's annual week-long summer camp on Catalina Island. Camp Cherry Valley (CCV) is near Two Harbors and has platform tents with cots and mattresses, running water, a dining hall, and a dock with kayaks, canoes and sail boats.
On Sun. we meet at 11 am at the Ralphs parking lot. Wear your Class A uniform, but without the neckerchief or sash. Bring everything on the equipment list in a duffle bag with a red ribbon marked "Troop 509," plus a day pack with snacks, reading material, playing cards, etc. Scouts may not bring knives or cell phones, unless permitted by Dr. Kast for good cause (the adults will have cell phones, plus the camp has a land line). We carpool to our boat in Long Beach, docked next to the Queen Mary. The boat leaves at 2:30 with us and the other toops going to CCV for the week, and takes 2 hours to get to Two Harbors on Catalina Island. Eat your sack lunch on the boat or food can be purchased on the boat. At Two Harbors we put our gear on a truck, then hike 1.5 miles on a dirt road to CCV.
At CCV we sleep on cots with mattresses on 2-person platform tents on raised decks. Nearby will be restrooms (kaibo) and showers. Down near the beach are the dining hall and camp store. Food left in tents must be secured so foxes don't take it. Each morning we wear our Class A uniforms (with neckerchief) for the flag-raising ceremony and uniform inspections, but after breakfast we can change into our troop t-shirt. Bring some pocket money, as the camp store sells slush puppies, candy bars and other treats, plus some of the merit badges require the purchase of materials.
There are two dozen merit badges offered at CCV, and each scout can sign up for 3 merit badge classes, plus can earn additional merit badges during free time (scouts often return home with 6 or more merit badges). A few merit badges are limited to scouts age 14+, including small boat sailing, rifle shooting and wilderness survival. Scouts can also work on requirements for Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class rank advancement, either in a class or during free time (Dr. Kast will be available for Scoutmaster conferences).
Everyone takes a swim test on Monday, and depending on skill level, for the rest of the week scouts can use the kayaks and canoes during free time (always with a buddy). Archery and BB gun shooting are also available during free time. Scuba diving costs extra (a lot), and you must sign up before going to CCV.
Other activities are nightly campfires, the mile swim (did you know that Dr. Kast holds a Dutch record for distance swimming?), snorkling, Highland Games, and Tribe of Torqua. Do skits with your patrol at the campfire. Wednesday is hike day, to our choice of Silver Peak or Shark Harbor or Emerald Bay or Parson's Landing or Little Fisherman's.

This year's theme is Time Travel, and over 400 scouts are expected to attend. Coordinate with your patrol leader what food you are bringing (or how much money you are contributing toward patrol food), as patrols will be cooking Sat. breakfast, lunch and dinner and Sun. breakfast (some may want to also cook Fri. dinner, for rank advancement or the cooking merit badge). Coordinate with your patrol leader about who you are tenting with and which of you is bringing the tent.
The patrol leaders need to get cooking equipment from the quartermaster, make a patrol flag, write a patrol yell reflecting the Camporee's theme, and organize patrol food and tents. You should also bring sand for the sand buckets (you can get it free from the sandbag station at the park in LCF on Foothill Blvd. next to the 2 freeway terminus). If you haven't memorized the outdoor code, bring a copy of it with you. It's optional, but recommended, that you also prepare a patrol skit for the campfire.
On Sat. morning and early afternoon we and other troops in the Rose Bowl District do activities that are judged and scored. The winning patrols will be announced at Sat. night's campfire (in your Class A uniform).
Drivers are needed to take scouts up to Trask on Fri., and pick them up Sun. at 9:30 am. Scouts will return to the Ralphs parking lot around 10-11 am on Sun. Cars that park at Trask are required to back in (to be able to evacuate quickly in an emergency).
If you go to or leave from Trask very early or very late, the gate may be locked, and if so, the front gate combo for the weekend is 8823 and the bridge gate combo is 1111.
