The Zoom link will be sent out when we get closer to the date. We hope to continue to have these talks regularly in the future, so stay tuned! If you have any questions or suggestions for future talks, please contact Mr. Shapiro (aashapiro@aol.com).

We leave at 6 am on Thu. Aug. 13 and drive 4 hours to the trailhead at Whitney Portal in the Eastern Sierras. After eating lunch while acclimating, we put on our backpacks and hike 6.3 miles with a 3,600 ft elevation gain to Trail Camp (12,000 ft), where we pitch tents and spend the night with the Pinnacles towering above us. The next day we carry day packs 4.7 miles with a 2,505 ft elevation gain to the summit (with lots of brief rest breaks along the way due to the altitude), arriving at noon, then return 4.7 miles to our tents at Trail Camp and spend the night. On Sat. Aug. 15 we hike 6.3 miles back to Whitney Portal and drive home. The total is 11 miles up and 11 miles down, with a 6,100 ft elevation gain. There is no rock climbing involved - we are always on a well-maintained trail, including the famous 99 switchbacks.
Our permit is for 15 people, the largest size allowed. Scouts and parents need to be experienced hikers in good shape. Since current virus restrictions don't allow the troop to have any outings at this time, you'll need to prepare by hiking with family members this summer. Hopefully the troop will be able to have a couple of practice hikes in late July and early Aug. to local peaks like Mt. Baldy. Mr. Haxton is organizing this trip.
On August 3rd, we will finally have a virtual continuation of the STEM talks that we began during our in-person Monday night meetings. This is open to everyone, so mark your calendars! We will have two speakers, Melora Larson and Cory Hill, who will present for about half an hour each about their careers, why STEM is so important, and how Scouts can plan for a future in STEM. The Zoom link will be sent out when we get closer to the date. We hope to continue to have these talks regularly in the future, so stay tuned! If you have any questions or suggestions for future talks, please contact Mr. Shapiro (aashapiro@aol.com).
Northern Tier is one and a half weeks of canoeing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Minnesota. We fly to Minneapolis and take charter vans to Ely, Minn. We paddle all day, portage between lakes, camp at a different lake each night, and rarely see other humans. We will travel about 120 miles and cross about 50 lakes. We originally had 24 people in three crews going, but due to the worsening virus conditions in many parts of the country during June and July, shortly before the trip 14 chose to go next summer instead. Each of our two crews will have 5 people in two canoes, plus a Northern Tier guide. For this High Adventure outing, scouts must be at least 14 at the time of the trip, or 13 and have completed 8th grade. The expected cost is $1,300, which includes plane fare. For questions contact Mr. Haxton.

Last week the Troop Committee discussed the options for holding a Court of Honor. The Committee believes that it is important to recognize the progress many of our scouts have made - both before and during the pandemic shutdown. Faced with the fact that it is not realistic to expect that the troop will have access to von Karman for the foreseeable future, we have decided to schedule a virtual Court of Honor for Saturday, July 18th at 2:00 pm. We will be sending more information on the technical part of this once we are closer to the date.
In the meantime, we know that many have been working on both merit badges and rank advancements. To ensure that this work is properly booked and included in the Court of Honor you need to do the following:
Merit Badges
You have three options for getting these signed and submitted:
1. Mail a physical blue card if you have one to the Counselor and include a stamped return envelope. When you receive it, drop or mail the blue card to me. Want a physical blue card? Pick one up outside my front door (914 Valley Crest, La Canada) but warn me so I make sure some are there. I have attached a virtual one that you can print and use.
2. Mail a physical blue card if you have one to the Counselor and include a stamped return envelope. When you receive it, scan it and email it to Mr Serricchio
(frederick.serricchio@jpl.nasa.gov) and me.3. Fill out a blue card and email a picture/scan to the counselor. He/She can print/sign/scan and return. Forward the digital version to Mr Serricchio (frederick.serricchio@jpl.nasa.gov) and me.
Rank Advancement
Whatever the rank, this is easy to do. A number of people have done it. The steps:
1. Fill out the advancement form (attached). It can be filled in on the computer.
2. Send the advancement form and photos/scans of the rank pages from your book to your SPL. If you did any requirements virtually, get the person who you did them with to send an email to the SPL. You might need to send photos of your outings or service pages as well.
3. Allison or JJ will sign, scan and email it back to you and cc: your Scoutmaster (Dr Kast or me).**
4. Arrange and do a Zoom Scoutmaster conference with Dr Kast or me (make sure we get the rank advancement pages)
5. Your scoutmaster will sign your advancement form and send it back to you.
6. Set up a Zoom call with 3 Scouts & an adult (or 3 adults for higher ranks). Email them all the advancement form and rank advancement pages. Need names & emails? Contact me.
7. After the BoR, ask them each to print, sign and return to you. Forward all forms to me.
**If you are a boy working on Scout rank, the advancement form and rank page will go to Mr Miles after JJ signs it and you will do the Scoutmaster Conference with him.
Shortly before the COH, Mr Serricchio will send out a list of everything he has received. The deadline to get paperwork in will be July 12th. Mrs Barcelo will be putting together a virtual program and distributing it to the troop.
It will be on Jul. 11 from 1-4 p.m., and we will be going over first class knots, second class fire safety, and first class first aid. Check the sign up below for more information.

E-camping 2.0 starts tonight, and goes from May 15-17. You need not join us in all the events to take part in this awesome adventure. For example, you can come to the campfire tonight, but not sleep outside.
1. All scouts who join in on any zoom meeting must join with there first and last name. Then there will be a waiting room, and only scouts who use their real name will be admitted.
2. To help the leadership team out, we have multiple sign up geniuses. First is the main sign up for e-camping 2.0. This sign up genius is split into two parts. E-camping general and Chopped chefs. If you want to take part in the cooking competition, you must sign up under Chopped chefs. This is to help out our judges and to help us regulate the event. Secondly, there is the sign up genius for Rank Advancement Session #3. So for all those scouts who want to advance, go to that sign up and check out what Quentin Holmes is teaching. Lastly, there is a sign up genius if you would like to act as an entertainer in the campfire, created by Hadrian Huidor. So if you would like to share a story or sing a song, either sign up, or email him.(Hadrianhuidor@gmail.com). This is only for those who want to entertain, and not for those who just want to watch.
3. Here is the complete schedule for e camping 2.0. If you are confused, just log in to the zoom meetings when the time arrives, and my leadership team and I will remind you of what is going to be happening. The first thing up is the campfire led by Hadrian Huidor at 6:00pm tonight. So, I hope to see most of you there.
4. Here are some words from Mr. Walton on E-camping. More information on the camping requirements that he is mentioning can be found at the BSA COVID-19 FAQ page. "The Scout should be responsible for setting up his camping space (tent is optional) (help can be provided, but the Scout should be leading the exercise) (This is based on the requirement in the Camping merit badge "Sleep each night under the sky or in a tent you have pitched.") Home facilities (bathroom, kitchen, etc) can be used at anytime without penalty. Since there is no permission slip, there will not be BSA Insurance, any injury will be covered by the Scouts normal medical insurance In order to get credit for the event, the scout must send an email to gurusql@yahoo.com and cc the Scouts parent attesting that the Scout spent the night outside and did not sleep within the house for the evening Parents and/or siblings are allowed to camp as well, but family members 18 years or older should not be in the same tent as the Scout."
E-Camping will be held from the eve of Friday, April 17th, to the afternoon of Saturday, April 18th. This amazing event will consist of two main things. The first is backyard camping, and the second is joining in on some fun zoom events with your fellow scouts. Before you keep reading, I encourage you to watch this teaser trailer.
Here is the schedule:
Fri. 6:00 pm Opening ceremonies and cooking competition #1 judging. Food will be judged on presentation, creativity, and quality. Also, extra points will be given to scouts who use the secret ingredient. (If I told you what the ingredient was now, it wouldn't be a secret.) Only food cooked (or assembled) outside will be able to compete.
Fri. 7:30 pm Campfire will include songs, ghost stories, and one man skits by the scouts. It will also include a marshmellow heating competition, ( only regular sized marshmellows will be able to compete.) I also have a firepit for you guys to pretend to warm yourself over. In totatl, it will be a fun time to hang out and share stories. IMPORTANT: If you want to light a campfire at your home, you must have the fireman chit.
Sat. 7:00 Campsite inspection will commmence. Competetors will be judged on creativity, comfort, and cleanliness. Only scouts who slept outside will be able to take part.
Sat. 8:00 Cooking competition judging #2 will take place very similar to the first one. The only thing that will change is the secret ingredient. Once again, only food cooked (or assembled) will be able to compete.
Sat. 9:00 Camp games will include card games like code names and mafia. Join us and be surprised at the games you can play over zoom. Who knows, we might even play capture the flag.
Please sign up , and JJ will send those who sign-up the zoom meeting code.
Please sign-up on the sign-up genius.
Russel Kam will be leading his Eagle Project on Sat., Mar. 14 at the CEC preschool campus a block away from JPL (140 Foothill Blvd, La Canada Flintridge, CA 91011). We will be making a much needed nature themed seating area for the school age kids. First, we will make two benches out of locally sourced reclaimed wood, then we will make a decomposed granite landing area around it. Russel Kam cannot wait to see everyone there! If you are able to attend, please sign-up.
Who wants to advance and have fun! If so, come to Michael Shaikh's Eagle Project. Do you need service hours, other sign offs, or want to have a fun day? If the answer is yes, Michael Shaikh's Eagle Project is the best place to do all those things. At Descanso Gardens the group will be renovating benches. Descanso Gardens is a fun, family friendly place that people go to in order to have fun and enjoy nature. Currently, the benches in the rose garden need some renovation, so Michael is doing this project. It takes place Sat. and Sun. on Mar. 7 & 8 from 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Come join Michael to make Descanso Gardens an even more enjoyable place!
If you wish to help please sign-up here.

Exit on La Crescenta Ave., left on La Crescenta Ave., go south 1 mile, right on Oakmont View and go 0.5 miles then left on Barnes Cir then right on Beaudry Terrace which then becomes Beaudry Blvd after 0.3 mi. At the start of the day, a few members of the club will talk for 10-15 minutes about their organization and the components of a healthy yard. Then, the students will head off the the gardens to apply what they learned in useful gardening related volunteer work.
The Pasadena Garden Club is looking for at least a dozen 12-15 year olds to join along with a few adult chaperones. No experience is required.
This is a seminar to review to Eagle process. We will go through the process for the Eagle project, the reference letters, and the binders. Sign-ups will be pending.
This session will be lead by the T509(b) Eagle ASM and T509(g) SM, Mrs. Hagegard.
We are offering several bike rides with requirement sign-offs for the Cycling Merit Badge. This is an Eagle-required merit badge (for Eagle rank, Scouts must complete either the Cycling, Hiking or Swimming Merit Badge). This would be for the Cycling option. To complete the Cycling Merit Badge you must complete 7 bike rides (ie. Two 10-Mile, Two 15-Mile, Two 25-Mile and One 50-Mile bike ride).
Please sign-up for a bike ride on the sign-up genius.
